I’ve been looking at different recipes for homemade horse treats for a while now but last night I decided to just hunker down and make some. I found a recipe online that I like well enough and made a few modifications to come up with the horse cookies pictured above. These cookies are completely edible for people too, although they are first and foremost a horse treat so they are only mildly sweet.
Tapsalteerie Horse Cookies
1 1/2 cup applesauce (homemade is best of course)
1 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup flour
1 carrot grated
1 over ripe banana mashed
1TB Vegan shortening melted
1/3 cup molasses
pinch of salt (optional)
Mix everything together very well and then scoop by rounded spoonfuls onto a parchment lined pan.
Bake at 350 until golden.
Quite seriously that’s it. The response to the treats was varied.
Maddy loved them.
Fantine… not so much. Actually neither Fantine nor Lady would eat them at all. But Maddy, Belle, Beau and Leo were quite fond. I think the big girls would’ve been happier with something crunchier… of course Fantine hates apples so that was a problem for her I suppose.
Next time I’m going to leave them in the cold oven to dry out more I think… but they were actually quite tasty and were a huge hit with all the people in the house too.
